Given the cost per pound of payload, it may make sense to select smaller people to send to Mars. Smaller people consume fewer resources, can fit in smaller spaces, etc. so the savings could be considerable.
On the other hand, the population is smaller (hah!)--roughly 5 million in the USA (vs > 300 million overall), so the number of people with the needed qualities will be fewer. If we need a one-in-a-million person, there are 5 dwarves in the USA vs 300 other people to choose from.
