Explaining the Interrupted pendulum

http://ift.tt/1WYVD4v

An interrupted pendulum is one in which the string strikes a rod directly below the pivot point causing the pendulum bob to deviate from its previous circular trajectory into a trajectory of a smaller radius.

I've already derived an expression for the time period of the pendulum, and found that as the height of the rod increases so does the time period- but can someone offer an intuitive explanation of why this is the case?

Thanks in advance
