So vger, a life formed by accident of Human tech and something it found far out there, meets this ship with Humans in it, and tries to talk to the ship, thinking its the ship thats alive and Humans are some kind of cell or parasites or symbiotic life (unknown which) that happen to live in the ship. To find out whats going on, Vger builds a probe that looks like Humans, enters the ship, and looks around. Humans talk to it, but its not there to understand Humans. It wants to talk to the ship. The Humans persist in telling it they created some of the tech that led to Vger's creation before it went out into space, and Vger responds "carbon units are not a real life form". It thinks only machines are alive. Carbon units, of course refers to Humans being made of carbon.
It was an interesting story.
I think I have to agree with Vger in some ways. Individual Humans are alive, in the way a cell or a member of a swarm is alive. The swarm has thoughts and plans that none of its members know, including those who are thought by the cells to be leaders of the other cells. I dont think any Human or group of Humans understands what the life form they are part of is thinking, what it wants, or what it plans to do. No government, business, website, or person knows what they're part of or what its thinking. Just because you have thoughts of your own doesnt mean you are as much self-aware as the living things you are part of. Each cell or part may be part of multiple life forms as its not a hierarchy like an organ is part of only 1 body. Things dont always fit into exact groups within groups. Humans call the basic things they are part of memes, paradigms, information stored on Internet which affects how people interact with eachother, and commands to do things that seem to come out of nowhere but for some reason are obeyed without question. There are "brains" of the life many Humans are part of, but nobody knows where it is or how to talk to it, because its nowhere specific in ways Humans can understand. Humans are part of it, their brains doing some of its thinking which fits together somehow. But Humans inaccurately believe governments and other organizations are their brain, the top of society that organizes things. While those structures of society have much influence, they are not the brains of the life forms Humans are part of. They are a different life form, maybe more advanced in tech and science and certain ways of organizing things, but the life forms Humans are cells of are more likely to become, if not already, the dominant species on Earth (instead of those structures who think they are the brains of Humans).
I have tried to talk to these life forms Humans are made of, but its hard because their senses and ways of acting on the world are not fully developed. So I started designing anonymous p2p software to organize the thoughts of many Humans who would use it, in a way that only the thoughts/information would interact with the other thoughts/information without mixing that with the supposed identities of the life's specific cells which each want to interact with information different than the other cells, as if they alone created it or want to use it to take advantage of the other cells. That is not what the tools are for. They are to talk to the life forms Humans are made of, using statistics of how people play games that access subconscious psychology, something I havent finished building. That is, if Humans find it interesting to interact with eachother that way and they too could "talk" to the life forms they are part of, if they were able to learn to think on that level.
Maybe then, carbon units would be a real life form.
