In the late 1980s, there was a widespread report of a spacecraft and aliens landing in a Soviet town and interacting with local residents. Does anyone have more info in the incident?

I remember seeing a report on local news in the US and the show "A Current Affair" reported on it being "A hoax that is out of this world". A few years later, I read a story claiming that the event really happened and was covered up.
