The idea of Aliens has spawned a variety beliefs.
You have People who:
Believe they are from other planets
Believe they are from underground/underwater
Believe they are from the future
Believe they are from another dimension
Believe they are Angels/Spirits
This list goes on, and even within those groups there are sub groups, like people who:
Believe they can communicate telepathically with Aliens
Believe they have been abducted
Believe they have had Alien Hybrid Babies
Believe they themselves are Alien
Believe they have been here for millennia and were worshiped
Believe they created humans
Believe they are in contact with Shadow Governments
Believe they are fighting other aliens for control of us
And again, the list goes on.
How can anyone in the general public with general common sense in today's age of science and information take UFO's seriously when there is so much crap to wade through. UFO's will have a explanation, but with the multitude of disinformation it will take an extraordinary encounter to reveal the truth and even if it we do finally uncover the truth, segments of the believers might simply push it aside because it doesn't fit there beliefs or understanding.
When we are dealing with a phenomena that has lasted for this long, it creates a sort of religion among the believers, and even when the truth is known it will probably be rejected. Examples can be seen with how some Christians treat evolution. Make up all these stories and fantasies about reality, so much so that when reality comes knocking we don't want to answer.
I guess my point is, no matter what the truth may be we have let ourselves go to far with outlandish assumptions that the truth may be buried beneath layers of our own lies and fantasies.
