Why do the big corporations and governments seem to want to 'cover up' evidence of extraterrestrials?

Honestly it's silly to think that in an age where knowing is just as important as understanding, why hide the evidence? It's not like we are going to benefit from the uncertainty. I mean, we accept other animals like cats and dogs perfectly fine so I'm guessing if alien life exists, we will likely adopt similar bonds. Plus, the whole 'alien technology will kill us' thing seems highly probable if we haven't seen clear proof it exists already.

Maybe I'm far off from the reality of it though.
