Likelihood of Interning or Working at JPL in software Development.

Hey NASA folks!

I just recently finished my On-Site experience for the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars program (NCAS). It was an absolute blast and the Lego Rover competition was a ton of fun.

Ideally that's what I would like as a career, working at JPL as a software developer for future rovers and other robotics that NASA will use to explore our solar system.

Between NCAS and the Swarmathon competition it certainly gives me the impression that NASA is putting a big focus on educating and training the next generation to design, build and program robotics for space exploration. It's a lot cheaper and less dangerous to send robots.

However, what is the reality of this? My online searching indicates that JPL only has about 6,000 people and I'm sure the amount of people developing software for future rovers is even less.

What other options are out there for robotic space exploration?

Is this a "Top Level" dream career that only a handful of people ever achieve?

Thanks for any and all responses!
