Need Advice: FAANG eng to Space eng transition plan

Hi all:

I'm in my early 20's and I've been wanting to work in space as long as I can remember. Those plans were seriously derailed in college when I found out I was a pretty mediocre, not-knowing-what-kind-of-material-is-strongest, not-drawing-enough-free-body-diagrams head-ass aerospace engineer. A positive is that I found I'm fantastic in software and I enjoy it immensely. I graduated with a degree in computer science and just recently left my first job in favor of a position at one of the FAANG companies (Facebook/Apple/Amazon/Netflix/Google ). My previous manager's manager's manager and I have an outstanding relationship and he has told me that Bezos will read any email he sends his way - if I ever want to go to Blue Origin, he'd be happy to introduce me.

While that got me all hot and sweaty for my plans possibly being back on track, there's certainly no way that I can expect to transition to the space industry as a software engineer just by means of working at reputable companies, having a personal recommendation, and playing KSP until 3 in the morning. This theory was supported when I shot a Hail Mary application to SpaceX and was unceremoniously denied. So, Reddit: I believe I'm a baller with code, is there anything I can do *outside of work* that would help qualify me for a role doing anything in the Onboard Software Systems on these next-gen rockets and crew capsules coming out? Boeing, SpaceX, Nasa, Blue Origin, ULA, doesn't matter, I just need a starting point. Ideally, I'd like to stay at my new company for 3-5 years before leaving, so I've got a good bit of runway to prepare. I'd even consider taking aerospace classes again, as I was certainly not applying myself fully the first time around (compounded by a family tragedy) and still find the content interesting. Thanks everyone!
