Just got an offer to work as a contractor at NASA. Should I accept?

Hi, everyone! During my internship at GSFC, my boss was happy with all the work I did this summer that he’s currently filling up the paperwork for me to work as a federal contractor (web dev).

I still don’t know my salary yet, but I do have a friend who works under the same contractor and they’re being paid $50k/yr, and they’re not in IT. I’d assume it’d be at least $55k+. According to Glassdoor, they have 4% 401K matching and health insurance comparable to other jobs in the private sector. I believe PTO is the standard 15 days.

Is this worth it? I’m a bit worried, since I live in Puerto Rico and I have three job interviews waiting for me once I’m back. Maryland isn’t a very affordable place to live in compared to Puerto Rico, at least according to some googling I’ve been doing.

I’m having so many second thoughts. A federal contractor role isn’t exactly a safe job compared to being a civil servant, but the fact that I could be working for NASA in a matter of a few months feels amazing! Not to mention I’ve known several contractors on center who have managed to transition to a civil servant role after a few years, so that is definitely within the realm of possibility.
