I had an experience with a Grey last night that I want to tell you about.
I took a solo night hike last night on the north rim of the Grand Canyon. It’s quiet at night and I didn’t think much of the clear sounds of someone else on the trail with me. Yes it’s a remote trail but it’s peak season and so that’s to be expected.
The noise was hard to pinpoint. Wasn’t sure if it was someone ahead or behind me, partly because of the rimrock and canyons. And partly because the noise really did seem to jump back and forth.
I stopped and so did the noise.
It was damn dark. In Canyon and no moon that I could see.
I was glad to enter a “rebel” campground (aka unofficial). I could smell smoke. Walked up and saw a few thin flames. Embers. Someone sitting there. Odd. Naked? Yes. Okay well... a few steps closer.
“Hey mind if I...”
It turned around and it was clearly a Grey. Massive black eyes and sort of a silent shriek.
Next thing I know... I feel like I am flying backwards, then like a rock hit me on the head. Lights out.
I find myself standing on the trail. But where. I don’t immediately recall anything. Huh, I think, this smoke (lot of wild fires) and heat has zapped me. Turn around... within 100 yards I’m back at my car. Huh.
Start the drive to my camp spot... but as I do I start to remember a bit more and more.
And now a full 24 hours this is where I’m at.
