When an atomic nucleus is geometrically stable, it is said to have a closed outer nucleon shell. According to mathematical models of isotope radioactivity, element 115, isotope 291 exists in the center of an “island of stability” where it may exhibit little to no radioactive decay. Further research into nuclear stability of superheavy isotopes has shown a potential for yet higher islands of stability, opening up the possibility of double magic nuclei even more massive than element 115. An examination of the evidence reveals a noteworthy lack of documented investigation to this subject.
