And by “direct appearance” I mean “purposefully exposing themselves, probably in broad daylight, so that we will notice almost right away”.
Of course there are so many factors - known and unknown - that could (potentially) affect an alien race that decides to reveal themselves to the human race that it’s really just impossible to tell what their intentions would be, let alone what they would even look like. Here are some of my theories for if aliens decided to basically announce themselves to humanity;
- Could possibly be trying to protect us from some greater threat, i.e another hostile alien empire
- Could be trying to conquer and enslave us for resources or manual labor
- Could be trying to integrate us into their intergalactic community/federation/empire for whatever reason
- Could be trying to save ourselves from causing a global mass-extinction event due to all the global warming affecting our planet, again for whatever reason
- Bit far-fetched but could be about to harvest us for resources/biomass
