This is going to take a bit of a Lovecraftian direction but please bear with me.
When taking into consideration the vastness of space, the time that humans existed on earth and the obvious, large differences in knowledge between us and the animals around us, I think it's safe to say that we must assume there is a lot more out there for us to know and discover.
Just as a dog is not aware to some of the amazing and fascinating things in this world (things like the molecular or atomic world, acts of kindness and heroism, creating medicine, writing, poetry...) so he is not aware to some of the heartbraking or terrifying things (things like torture, networks of human trade and slavery, terrorism, mental illnesses, horrible body diseases...).
Just due to the fact of us being more intelligent, we've gained access to a whole new world of information. Both good and bad. A being more intelligent than a human may have a same gap.
We do not know what is out there.
Somewhere, in some distant place in the universe, on some dark planets, there could be lurking forms of life that could turn out to be worse than our nightmares.
To us, they could be like some nightmarish abominations of this world. Not because of what they look like, but because what they know, what horrible things they are capable of and the actions they may take with strange reasons we couldn't possibly understand.
A contact with civilization like this could mean introducing humanity to a whole new set horrors that would break our minds if somehow we could just acknowledge them.
Maybe it's better to not know, maybe it's better to cover our eyes and keep close to what seems to be our safe spot here on Earth.
But maybe it's also inevitable, maybe something is already watching us or on our way here.
Maybe millions of years after we are dead many of us will find themselves ressurected on some distant alien planet, somehow coming back to life, miraculously pieced together by unknown methods.
Maybe we won't like the new life that would be forced on us. We would be in pain, screaming, used for purposes that seems like complete insanity, losing control of our body, find ourselves being fused to some disgusting looking creature like a parasite on its back. Living like this for thousands or millions of years.
These are just some late night thoughts that I wanted to share. While some of them may seems extreme and out of reality, when you take the to think about it becomes terrifying, because we provably don't know what "reality" actually is like and what kind of secret, terrible truths the universe is hiding out there in the vastness of space.
