Experience when I was younger.

First post in reddit, long time lurker so not sure if this is the right subreddit for this. I lived in a small town in North Carolina when this happened, Faith, Nc to be exact. Super small town, low crime, no drama. Most of the roads there are windy and wooded and go from no/few houses to a subdivision. It was about 9:00 pm, and mom and I were headed into the bigger town next to us to pick up some pizza. I remember it as clear as day, but when I think of it I get the chills, and kind of suppress it because of that but always wanted to tell others and see if anyone has experienced anything like this. So we are going down a dark wooded road, no streetlights. And I get the weirdest feeling, like terror or panic but I didn't say a word because I thought I was going crazy. As we turn a corner I see tons of lights in the wood, moving all sorts of directions on the wooded ground. When I say alot I mean ALOT. As we get closer I notice its people (or so I thought) off the side of the road looking for something in the woods. Then as we got closer I noticed all these things looked exactly the same, They were normal height, but had what Id call a respirator on, and a light coming from their head kind of like a miners helmet. I don't remember it being a flashlight though, to say I was in a daze is an understatement, it was almost as if it was coming from themselves. When we got to passing them we slowed down and all at once they all looked at us, at the exact same time. I felt nothing but terror, as we slowly drive but now they are on either side of the car, just staring, standing still. There were some in the woods and now also some directly on either side of the car. They didn't look alien, they looked human to me, but they all looked exactly the same and all had the same blank stare as we drove by and I felt as if they were looking inside me, i felt violated for some reason. Motionless faces, all looking the same, just staring. My mom and I were both freaked the fuck out but said nothing. After we passed, about 1/2 mile down the road I said wtf was that, and she was shaking so being an idiot I said go back. It was only less than a minute when I had her turn around. Not a single damn thing was anywhere, in the woods, off the side of the road, nowhere. No way the number of these things could leave without a trace this fastSo we finished the ride to get pizza, and it was past 10:00 and they were closed. There was no way we spent even a fraction of that time getting there even with us turning around, it would only take 15 minutes max to get there. When I mention this to my mom who is now in her 60s (this happened in the mid 90s, im 38 now) she refuses to talk about it. Also I never saw any type of car or truck or vehicle anywhere around if I was just scaring myself. But even if human, why the respirators, and why did they all look at us at the exact same time. Anyways anyone hear of or experience anywhere close to this type of thing?
