How can a non-earth organism be categorized?

Solve a debate between a friend of mine and myself.

On Earth, all species are divided into groups. Mammal, fish, insect, reptile etc. It is reasonable to suggest that this standard can only apply to earth lifeforms because they share a "common ancestor" or evolutionary path.

Because of this, a non earth life form, which might appear insectoid for example, would not be categorized as an insect, right?

And how would extraterrestrial organisms be categorized? By planet? Solar system? Galaxy? Or would all life forms be "re-catagaorized" to allow all to be relatable to each other? And how would this information be exchanged? Would intergalactic zoologists have individual books on each planets taxonomy? Wouldn't this become impractical and logistically difficult?

What do you think?
