Battlefleets systematically invade and conquer new worlds for the Empire of the Black Sun, as it continually expands in all directions. The Draconian Empire needs a constrant stream of new souls in order to quench the wicked thirst of it's cursed inhabitants. Without souls, and the life energy that is extracted from them, the Empire will literally die out like a slowly diminishing flame.
Day and night, massive fleets of genetically engineered, psionically enhanced super-soldiers emanate from the rotten core of this fallen Empire. Like an expanding wave of pure destruction and death, their presence is felt keenly by the other races of our galaxy. Many races have fallen victim to the Draconians over the many millenia that they have continued their ruinous advance.
The races that survived did so because they had some unique biological property that was useful to the Draconians, or because they willingly chose to ally themselves with the Dying Suns out of fear of total annihilation. Some of these conquered races have become biologically altered slaves who serve as low-level manual laborers, food, and expendable soldiers. The civilizations that decided to join the Draconians were usually wiped out or fully integrated into the Empire (as slaves) at a later date.
As the Draconians know, our galaxy is finite, but the universe is not. They realize that at some point in the future they are going to run out of souls to torture and harvest, which means that they will have to find a way to travel to other galaxies or even other dimensions in order to continue to survive as a species. They have calculated the approximate year wherein our galaxy is completely under their rule and harvested of soul energy. They consider this to be "Year Zero" and it is an important concept in the cultural narrative of the Great Struggle. The great quest of the Draconian race is to achieve immortality without having to be dependent on the constant harvesting of life energy.
Using extremely sophisticated technology, they have tried to steal the solar energy from suns in order to artificially extend their lifespan, extinguishing many solar bodies and plunging entire inhabited systems into total and eternal darkness. However, this process has been found to be extremely inefficient and it is not considered to be a suitable replacement for Soul Harvesting.
EDIT: According to some obscure sources, the Black Seers of Draconis have already devised ways of creating portals to other realities. These "Black Doorways" are supposedly made out of a special bio-mechanichal substance (the same substance used in the creation of Multi-Dimensional Soul Matrices) which allows it to interact with energies from multiple dimensions. These Doorways are then powered by a mass "Pain Fields" - large collections of captured souls who are ritually tortured in order to produce the required amount of negative psychic energy that is needed to power the interdimensional structure.
