I think I may have a piece of Columbia or some other failed space mission....

Ok so I have a business and one of my functions is cleaning out foreclosed properties and working with real estate agents in that capacity. One of the properties that I cleaned out happened to belong originally to a man who worked for TRW a company out of Redondo Beach that carried a lot of government contracts in the private sector, including contracts from NASA. The gentleman who owned this property, had passed away 10 years before we went into it. It was his daughter who stopped making payments and abandoned all their belongings, sadly, very rich history she lost. however I found out her father did retire from working at TRW, he was there from 1966 to 1986, working in the communications department. I found all kinds of really neat NASA and space memorabilia such as flight patches, tiepins, and other NASA approved memorabilia as well as less "run of the mill" accoutrement, like personal photographs of the Apollo capsule dated March 69. I also found upon deeper searching a small piece of metal which is as light as maybe even later than aluminum and so strong that when I put all of my weight against it I cannot bend it. It is painted with a sage or military color green and it appears as though there were rivets in it at one point, one of the edges of the strip is quite obviously torn. As a reasonable person I would think it probably is just some military rocket or something, however I have to wonder why this guy would save something like that, when it was really only space stuff that he collected. So first off I am wondering how to identify what this piece of metal might actually be from- it is definitely hi tech. And then what to do with it, I'm not exactly sure how to proceed with this piece if it is actually possibly a part of any of the space missions, what are the legal ramifications for having such a thing or how I should even deal with it properly. Any insight and or Reccomendations are appreciated
