Sending message to potential aliens was a mistake and we might not have done it today

Quoting Stephen Hawking: “Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they could reach”

When the Arecibo radio message was sent in the seventies people were generally more optimistic, humanity looked at the stars, and the possibility of an extraterrestrial life form with ave.

After the nineties and with the rise of social media and the internet, mixed with a couple of economic depressions, I think westerners became more hostile towards outsiders and the optimism of the '50s-80's more or less evaporated, a gritty sense of realism took it's place.

I tend to agree with Hawking, if an alien civilization find that message, we just might be in grave danger.

Still I'm for making the first contact. Just the sheer historical importance of it would be amazing, not mentioning the changes in society it would cause, which would be really something to witness.
