Why is audio fidelity in communications to astronauts low

I work with VOIP and video conferencing equipment for a living so my ear is trained to notice audio quality and fidelity. (If you listen to enough VOIP audio you notice it)

When watching the latest space walk it occurred me to wonder why space audio communication, especially during spacewalks seem to be using narrow band frequencies for the audio. I’m assuming it’s all digital communications.

Note the quality is good, it’s the fidelity I’m wondering about.

It seems like once moving to digital communications you would want to move to a wide band audio frequency so that all words are heard clearly rather than have sounds cut off at the higher frequencies of natural human speech.

Does anybody know anything about this?
