The ISS, Gateway, Moon & Mars future..

I just wanted to share some of my ideas that I've had for a while some that had been bothering me about the proposed plan for the International Space Station the Gateway our mission back to the Moon and on to Mars.

I'm a huge supporter for the International Space Station I believe it is one of Mankind's greatest technological achievements. I've had this idea for a long time that we should reconfigure the International Space Station and make it into a mobile platform for interplanetary space flight within our solar system.

I was inspired by this idea after watching The Martian and seen the spaceship Hermes. And I thought to myself Why Can't This be done to the International Space Station?

If you want to talk about astronaut safety and redundancy of systems there is nothing more safe and redundant than the International Space Station being used as a mobile platform to operate within the solar system. With a few modifications of course.

Not only could we use the International Space Station as a mobile space platform for interplanetary travel it could serve as emergency Lifeboat or rescue ship in case anyone was stranded on the moon or on Mars.

Using the ISS we wouldn't have to build the lunar Gateway. Saving time and money !

A lot of people are going to say that the ISS could not be used for such an Endeavor that it's a 20 year old piece of hardware and it would not withstand the stress in the strains of interplanetary travel and I would argue differently the space station has been exceptionally resilient to age. It's not perfect but it's a hell of an achievement and it's been in Earth orbit for the last 20 years.

We could move the ISS from Earth orbit to a lunar orbit and keep it there as long as we need. Then after resupplying and refueling we could move the ISS to a Mars Orbit.

The International Space Station was designed to be modular so if you're worried about some of the modules maybe being too old then let's replace them with updated modules clearly the backbone of the ISS is in great condition and it's structural members.

I would love to hear you guys is thoughts on this idea of reconfiguring the ISS and giving it a new life in a new Mission with a new purpose for interplanetary travel.
