Imagine you are in a Star Trek setting (if you will) and in charge of monitoring from an cloaked orbital space station an alien race's planet, somewhere deep in another star system, that has yet to be contacted by the galactic federation because of the "prime directive." You are a scientist for the federation and are in charge of reporting back to your superiors what you are witnessing on this baby planet at its nascence regarding technology. You come from a technological Utopia.
What you see startles you. The level of inequality is staggering with large portions of the planet living in shacks or on the streets with little food. War and murder rage across the planet's surface. Genocides bred of hatred have taken place multiple times.
Now you know what the aliens are seeing right now as they monitor Africa and parts of India and the streets of downtown Los Angeles' skid row. We need to get our act together as a planet for the aliens. It's sad and frankly embarrassing that we have a homeless problem and a hunger crises on this planet, let alone the blood spilled from wars and gang violence.
They may have their own "prime directive" having to do with a planet's level of technological advancement. Perhaps having to do with the singularity or life extension technology. They will likely arrive eventually, bringing advancement socially and technologically with them. This is the miracle we are hoping for everyone. An alien arrival from a galactic federation intent on bringing an end to our problems. May the day come and may the alien federation that choses to encounter us be a friendly one.
