What Happened to SR-71 Blackbird 61-7965 North of Area 51?
SR-71 Blackbird, serial number 61-7965, call sign ASPEN 28, departed Beale AFB at approximately 7PM on October 25, 1967 for a three hour night training flight. It was piloted by Maj. Roy St.Martin, the RSO Officer was Capt. John Carnochan.

The flight would consist of a high-altitude, supersonic leg to a air refueling area near Albuquerque, followed by a second climbing
acceleration east of Denver and return to Beale AFB, tkaing them on a westbound leg north of Salt Lake City.

The flight progressed normally through the air refueling and second acceleration to supersonic cruise. Descent and deceleration from cruise was initiated in the vicinity of Elko, Nevada, approximately two hours and fifteen minutes after takeoff. About 2 hours into the flight, warning lights came on, indicating an unusual attitude of
the aircraft. Even though their guages showed a straight flight path, air traffic control showed the aircraft was making a 180-degree turn.

The pilot had no outside reference to recover due to it being pitch black outside. Once the aircraft started losing airspeed, the pilot directed his RSO (Reconaissance Systems Officer) in the rear seat to bailout. At this point the aircraft was at 30,000 feet. The pilot stayed with the aircraft for a period, trying to recover the aircraft, but eventually he bailed out as well.
