I’ve spent a lot of time in rivers lately fly-fishing. There are many metaphors that come to mind, such as, “how do we keeping our footing in the midst of a rushing current of change?” My message is particularly inspired by the following poem by Wendell Berry titled “Our Real Work”. The poem reminds us that, it is when a stream is blocked, its flow disrupted or its direction diverted that it “sings”. In this time of disruption and diversions and hindrances of many kinds, how can we find our footing and our true voice?

It may be that when we no longer know what to do,
we have come to our real work
and when we no longer know which way to go,
we have begun our real journey.
The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.
