You ever notice how aliens of the same kind all seem to be eerily similar?
The greys, for example. They are all the same height, have the same complexion, bodily gestures, builds, etc. They look practically identical to one another.
Or the tall whites, as another example. They are all pale, have golden-esque hair, are basically the same height, same builds, wear the same clothes...
Where is the diversity?
You look at humans and just consider all of our differences...
Height, from 4’ adults to 8’ tall adults. Weight, from dangerously underweight at 100 pounds to half-ton extremes. Hair, from albino white to blond to brown to black. Eyes, from green to blue to grey to black to brown to hazel. Skin color, from pale white to yellowish to beige to orangish to brown to deep black.
Aside from biological differences, you’ve got cultural differences. We have different foods; Ethiopian cuisine, sushi, noodles, currys, tacos, pizza, barbecue, spaghetti, falafel. We have different religions; Christianity, Islam, Judaism— pagan religions with Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Aztecan, Native American. We have different traditions, values, histories, art...
Where is the alien diversity?
I think the answer is monoculturalism. I think that a species will either already be generic and one-note, or as a species evolves and progresses, assimilation will happen naturally and a monoculture will inevitably reign.
This is my biggest fear with humans. I don’t want our diversity to evaporate. I don’t want a monoculture. I want us all to stick together. I want humanity to be known for its diversity. I’m afraid that the natural evolution of intelligent species is to end up with a single culture. I think that it is possible that our diversity attracts aliens. I think it’s our best feature.
But time marches on. Will we retain our diversity or will we slowly become one-note like the greys?
