Police have been using a new kind of tool to solve old cases. It's called Genetic Genealogy.

In Genetic Genealogy, DNA profiling and DNA testing are done with traditional genealogical methods, to determine the level and type of the genetic relationship between individuals. Police use genetic genealogy to track down suspects and identify deceased individuals.

In this process,
Unknown DNA samples found at the scene during an investigation are compared to samples in the public database to see if it matches. Genetic genealogy sites GEDmatch and Family Tree DNA also allow their databases to be used by law enforcement.The investigators hope to find a person related to a suspect by this process. This allows investigators to narrow their search.

Our first case,
Case of Peggy Beck is believed to be the oldest case to be solved by using Genetic Genealogy testing.
