Irvin Yalom, emeritus professor of psychiatry at Stanford University, is author of numerous books on psychotherapy including Existential Psychotherapy and Love's Executioner.  He suggests that the symptoms initially presented in therapy often serve to mask deeper, underlying existential fears, and maintains that the main healing factor in psychotherapy is the relationship that is formed between therapist and client.
