Disclaimer: purely speculation based on the humanoid appearance of the greys. Take my opinion with a huge portion of salt, or at best, a probably been done before science-fiction work that I can't remember existing, but has occurred to me as a original thought.
Please poke holes in this: I won't reply, but I will consider what you say.
We're in an infinite loop with the greys, and at one end is our closest ape ancestor to a genetically engineered anamenis, and at the other end is the current incarnation of the greys.
The greys at some point discover time travel and go back to the create anamenis, because otherwise they can not exist.
They then have to come back to share some tech with us to seal the deal: ensuring we will advance towards becoming them, before destroying the planet.
Right now they're saving us in order to save themselves.
Of note: we've all seen the hypothetical of what our appearance will be in some hundred years from now: large eyes, small noses, taller.
Also, I believe the a lot of pop science points towards this reality.
