A new sunspot emerged during the early hours of July 3rd, and immediately exploded. New sunspot AR2838 erupted today at 07:14 UT, producing a strong M2.7-class solar flare. NASA's SDO caught the explosion from the blast site on the sun's northwestern limb.

We will know soon if there is any associated CME with this event as further imagery becomes available. However, due to its location on the NW limb,
a CME could give Earth a glancing blow.

R1 Radio Blackout
A pulse of extreme UV radiation from the flare ionized the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere on the dayside of our planet. This caused a blackout of radio transmissions at frequencies below 10 MHz. The effect was particularly strong above SE Asia/China/India/Middle East.
