Two solar filaments lifted off the sun in beautiful eruptions on Aug. 22-23. Both eruptions produced CMEs observed with the SOHO LASCO C2/C3 coronagraphs.
One exploded on Aug. 22nd in the sun's far-southern hemisphere and the CME it produced could probably deliver a glancing blow to Earth.
Another exploded on Aug 23rd in the sun's northern hemisphere and the CME it produced appears to be in the Earth strike zone. Images from SOHO show a faint but definite halo CME expanding around the sun. Based on its appearance, the CME is unlikely to miss our planet. According to NOAA analysts, it will arrive late on Aug. 26th.
High latitude skywatchers should be alert for auroras.
