London is the capital of Great Britain and a global financial hub. We know it to be a quiet historic city and some may believe it will be their future vacation destination due to its tourist attractions and modernity. But there was a time when most people would have rejected the idea of even visiting the city. Subsequently, during the 19th century, London was renowned to be the capital of the world's biggest empire on the planet. Despite that, it was one of the worst places to live in because of the immense noise and pollution caused by the industrial revolution.

The London in 1800s was quite different from what we see nowadays. The streets were full of mud and filth, a thick cloud of smog had settled over the city polluting the air to the point it was hard to breathe and the sewage was directly being dumped into the River Thames. Due to this extensive pollution, River Thames had become immensely notorious. On a hot summer day in 1858, politicians were forced to vacate their buildings due to the abhorring event what we now refer to as “The Great Stink”

And unfortunately for everyone, water companies also used the Thames River to bottle water and sell it. But in the midst of all this filth, how exactly a used diaper did led to the death of 500 people and caused a local pandemic. And more importantly, how did beer save a building full of workers from it ? We are about to find out in a bit.
