This is why 98% of adoptions in Japan are of adult men!
Japan’s corporate culture is both extremely patriarchal and family-oriented. The perception of being a “family business” is a major advantage for companies there, and companies will outright refuse to pass the reins over to a female heir.
That’s why business owners will sometimes adopt their adult male proteges if they don’t have a son, so they can still be perceived as passing the company down the family line.
These adoptions are often paired with Omiai, an arranged marriage to the executive’s daughter, to complete the full family integration.
Even mainstream companies like the Suzuki car company make use of this practice - The current owner being fourth in the line of adoptive sons to take over the company. And this is by no means a modern trend - It’s a tradition believed to date back to Buddhist and Samurai practices as early as the 13th Century.
