Tido Visser talks with Anne McLean of the Library’s Music Division about his work as Artistic and Managing Director of the distinguished Netherlands Chamber Choir, founded in 1937. Considered one of the world’s great ensembles, the choir is known not only for impeccable performances of traditional repertoire, but for pathbreaking projects—new commissions and multi-media and cross-disciplinary collaborations—that expand the boundaries of the choral literature. This conversation focusses on two performances by the choir that are offered as virtual programs in the 2021-2022 Concerts from the Library of Congress season. The first is J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248, recorded with Concerto Köln as the accompanying ensemble, and the second is Orlando Lasso’s 1594 Lagrime di San Pietro, a masterwork of Renaissance polyphony presented with a dancer, Marijn Rademaker. Tido Visser also discusses his vision in creating and directing projects for the choir that underline the power of music to foster reconciliation and social harmony.
