How does the outer core produce Earth's magnetic field?

I have been trying to find the mechanism that explains the Earth's magnetic field, and I run into many sources claiming that the convection of the molten metal in the outer core produces the magnetic field. I don't understand how a current can be produced this way, since I don't see why the metals would have an electric charge. Do any of you know what is currently the most widely accepted explanation for the electric currents that give rise to the magnetic field?

Thank you!
