I think that if we don't know how to talk to animals, we can't talk to less intelligent aliens. If they are more intelligent than we are, they already know about us, and they already understand us. And the possibility to reach aliens similar to us, is really small compared to the other two options. And if it turns out we are pets compared to them, they already tried to contact us and they suggested to keep it a secret. Even for ourselves we consider some humans aliens, like the other cultures that have violence and rape. We have to overcome the need to have a culture to be sufficiently developed to contact aliens. Because if we do not overcome culture, war is a possibility. And no one want an interplanetary war, because we care for our own planet, that's why we don't use nuclear weapons here, but what stops us for using them on their planet? So we still have a long way to go to find a way to overcome culture, one approach to this, could be to have an "earth world order", but that is not enough because we all will have the same culture. The point is to not have a culture but live in harmony. We don't know how to achieve that yet, we are not even pursuing it. When we achieve a level of evolution, they are going to contact us.
