Having somebody who can swoop in and save the day definitely seems like a nice idea. From parents to friends, we all depend on other people from time to time to help us out of sticky situations, and to generally make us feel more secure. But what about those situations where we have caused difficulty for ourselves by our own actions? Is intervention really in our own best interest?
Learning hard lessons is part of life, and part of growing and maturing, both as people and as a society. Many people like to believe that extraterrestrials will somehow automatically have our best interests at heart. If this is the case, would they seek to intervene directly, or would they wait for us to cultivate human wisdom and human responsibility by our own initiative?
