The old Countdown Clock that was retired a few years ago, how was it actually controlled?

This is really just a random interest thing because I do like clocks. Were the signals to it remote, did it have its own timekeeping ability?

I'd just love to find out the technical nitty gritty about that clock, just really for idle interest. Thanks!
