This seems like an odd post, how can we map something that is continually moving? And how can a layman possibly understand anyway? The calculations are so intense.
I recently posted a question here about how to find the angle (from above, whatever that means, to clarify,) of the Earth from the sun using Horizons.
I imagine there are two types of thoughts when reading it:
1) I have no idea what he just asked, but I like space. 2) This nOoB has no idea how to ask NASA a question.
Why am I having such a hard time finding a layman's method of knowing how to communicate about the solar system?
If you hand me a map of the ocean, I can navigate with that. But there was a time when it would have said "Here be dragons." The navigators would still get around, but it's because they had the equivalent of a Masters in math.
I feel like that's where we are right now, Google searches to no end have turned up only the math. Yes, it would be nice if I knew the math.
But there came a point where maps of Earth could be used by an eight year old. Where do I find that map of the solar system?
What direction is up in the solar system? What is zero degrees from the sun? Where's my compass rose?
