People usually say that there must be thousands of intelligent life (Including potential intelligent life that are in their caveman ages) and for the most part it would make sense. But what about the obstacles?
Here are the things intelligent life would need to avoid in order to reach our current state of development:
Requirements to let life start:
-
Live in a stable galaxy and not too close to the center black hole of the galaxy
-
Have a relatively young host star so that it doesn't go red giant or supernova before the race manages to get to other star systems. Also the star can't be too big.
-
Have a stable planet suitable for life
-
The race must have the correct anatomy for language and intricate tool making
-
Have a suitable atmosphere
-
Make sure your species doesn't get wiped out by animals
-
An about-to-go supernova star shouldn't be near the star system
-
The race must discover fire
-
The planet must have a moon?
-
The race would need to discover other have-to-have mechanics and devices while also managing to stay alive
-
An asteroid or any other planetary collision that is colossal enough will be an instantaneous game over
There is even more. (This is the exact same thing as The Great Filter Theory lol)
-
Other advanced aliens don't wipe out the planet (or dyson sphere the star)
-
Avoid any Gamma Ray Bursts
I'm sure there are a lot more things, but we'll skip those and head into our times.
-
Someone doesn't set off nukes
-
Someone doesn't create an accidental black hole
-
Zombie apocalypse or some other disease type doesn't wipe out the race
It goes on...
Maybe the reason intelligent life is so rare is that the species doesn't grow out of violence and destroys itself. Or maybe natural disasters may be wiping out potential intelligent races on a daily basis.
Humans are lucky.
