Alien life most likely similar to our own

So far as we know, all species on Earth are, chemically speaking, compatible with one another. There are apparent exceptions, such poisonous and venomous plants and creatures, but these due to are evolved defences - chemicals which are produced at the expense of the organism in question, and tend not to be vital to the necessary biological functions of that organism. Compatible life on Earth is, however, found in varying degrees of complexity anywhere where water is found, no matter what other conditions are present.

We know little about the origins of life on Earth, and of the chances of said life occurring at all. It is entirely possible that the earliest life of this planet existed at a chemical composition fundamentally different from that of our own, and evolved into the chemically similar lifeforms you see today at a differing paces.

Given such uncertainty, it is possible that any alien life encountered, and the majority of any alien life existing in the universe, is almost identical to us, not necessarily in appearance, but in terms of chemical composition, and of cellular structure.
