Engineering Career at NASA without the Pathways Program

I really want to get an engineering job at NASA, and there are a lot of threads across the internet with advice on what to do. I'm in my lower 20s, with a degree in mechanical engineering. A lot of advice people give is to get an internship, get into the pathways program; but I've graduated, and have absolutely no desire to back to school.

Unfortunately, I don't have much experience that would be applicable to aerospace engineering (though I do have an engineering job now). I need to stay where I am right now anyway, so I do have time to plan and prepare for when I go job hunting again, and so I want to move forward with a plan on the best possible path I can to getting to NASA.

I've heard networking is good idea, getting to know people already working there, but it's hard to hold a conversation for too long (I've contacted people through email found online). NASA contractors have also been said to be a good way, but there are a lot and I don't know which might be better than others for what I'm specifically aiming for (some might be even harder to get into than NASA). Is there any advice anyone can give on how best to proceed?
