First, sorry if this is the wrong subreddit. I spent a long time looking around and this seemed to be the most relevant. Please correct me and send me on my way if I'm mistaken.
Some background:
I've recently been accepted to become an officer in the United States Air Force. I know that a large percentage of astronauts are military pilots and test pilots. I originally applied intending to become a pilot, but a colonel & family friend told me that doing so would be a waste of my degree (majors in Astrophysics and Philosophy). Instead, I applied and was accepted to work in Space Ops. Will this hurt my chances at becoming an astronaut? I'm also working on my MS in Space Systems Engineering. I begin training next month, and am having some anxiety surrounding following the wrong career path.
TLDR; Is [Space Ops < Pilot] in the eyes of the astronaut selection board at NASA?
