Baker Island is a tiny spec of "land" in the Pacific, halfway between Hawaii and Australia. It also happens to be the closest US territory to the equater. Would it make sense in the future to expand it artificially and construct a launch pad (or space elevator), given the cost savings from equatorial launches?
