Question for everyone. Was there ever phytoplankton on Mars? What we know. There are icecaps on the planet, Mars has concentrations of Bifs(banded iron formations) and indicators of prior oceans. How does a banded iron formations form? In general, a bif could be created by photosynthesis converting the CO2 heavy atmosphere into free oxygen. The free oxygen in the water then combines with the iron to create hematite and magnetite. Does this indicate prior life on the planet?
