How are astronauts ears protected when getting blasted into space?

With space rockets being so incredibly loud and heard miles away, how do they manage to protect their hearing?

I familiar with ear muff over earplugs, but I can’t imagine that is suitable. Do the sound waves penetrate every kind of like bass does in a vehicle with over a dozen subwoofers?
