I was looking through many astronaut bios and seen that most were selected in their late 30s/40s but have retired by early 50's. Given that, they would have to undergo 2 years of training & even then, they wouldn't be assigned as a mission specialist/payload specialist, or pilot for a mission until many years after.
I understand that they need to be incredibly fit to be a NASA astronaut, but with such an amazing profession that people would give up an arm & leg for, wouldn't it make sense to make the most of your time as an astronaut with the longest duration? instead of just retiring after 1 or 2 spaceflights?
