Has anybody ever been part of a large group that witnessed alien phenomena, specifically a blue object or beam? What happened?

I witnessed a blue object/beam of light shoot out of the Atlantic Ocean off the Jersey Shore, gaining speed and fly straight off into what seemed like orbit. It was around 9pm and clear skies. Wasn't a search light or plane. This thing went from 0 to what seemed like light speed vertically in half a second if that. Also seemed like it was a few miles offshore. I was with a large group of people and only one other person saw it but said it was lightning. It could not have been lightning. Clear forecasts for the days before, during and after. Pleass help me make sense of this.
