I've always had an obsession with NASA and space exploration. When I went to medical school, I knew in the back of my head that there was some tiny possibility of doing Aerospace Medicine and applying for astronaut selection.
But after going through medical school, I realize I fell in love with the field of psychiatry and I will be applying for psychiatry residencies soon. I can still do an Aerospace medicine fellowship after psychiatry, I think.
There has never been a psychiatrist in space (to my knowledge) and most astronauts seem to be EM/FM/IM people. However, I know that space psychology is becoming more important given long-term missions. SO MY QUESTION: do you think NASA will ever choose a psychiatrist to go into space and conduct psychiatric experiments? It seems important, but definitely not the road most traveled.
