I’ve often considered how the appearance of aliens has changed over the years. Older accounts of otherworldly beings seem to be more rooted in stories of humanoids in metallic garb (chain mail, space suits, etc) where nowadays more current experiences are of greys, reptilians and mantis type creatures.
Now, this is a generalization, but an alien like a Nordic or Valiant Thor (for example) would be (figuratively) ripped to pieces in today’s social media climate. Spacemen were humanoids in space suits as recently as the 60s. If I remember correctly, the idea of greys really began to pick up steam after Roswell.
So, it begs the question. Do aliens present themselves in a way that current society can best accept them? Or does society affect our perception of what an alien would look like and are we seeing them in that way as a result? Or even more so, is the existence of an “alien” not physical or real but simply an apparition of our psyche, which is creating a being that we can relate to? Thoughts?
