The extraordinary JACK Quartet brings its ever-expanding notion of what a string quartet can be to their virtual residency. In their opening event they trace an interesting artistic lineage of American masters, revealing the compositional thread linking Ruth Crawford Seeger’s groundbreaking 1931 string quartet with Elliott Carter’s third quartet. Pianist Conrad Tao joins violinist Austin Wulliman in a landmark commission from the Library’s McKim Fund, Carter’s Duo. And music from MacArthur Fellow Tyshawn Sorey moves forward to a new generation of remarkable emerging composers featured in the exploratory JACK Frontiers program.
