On April 10th, something exploded on the farside of the sun. The STEREO-A COR 2 saw the debris flying over the Sun's eastern limb. The blast site was hidden from view, so we don't know what exploded.
What caused the explosion?
Possibilities include a farside sunspot or collapsing magnetic filaments.
The resulting coronal mass ejection (CME) will miss Earth. But consider this: If the exposion had occured only a couple weeks later, when the blast site would be facing Earth, we would now be bracing for a moderately strong geomagnetic storm.
A CME can send 20 billion tons of dangerously charged material into space.
Hopefully, Earth was not in the line of fire, so there will be no space weather consequences for our planet.
Stay Tuned!
